Huntsville, Ala., Aug 5, 2015 — Sentar Inc. announced today that one of its Sr. Information Assurance Analysts, Al Underbrink, has been asked to author a chapter in an upcoming cyber security publication by Springhill International Publishing AG by editors Sushil Jajodia, V.S. Subrahmanian, Vipin Swarup, and Cliff Wang. Al received this invitation after presenting at the Army Research Office’s Cyber Deception Workshop, held at George Mason University recently. Presenters and attendees included government, academia and business professionals throughout the cyber security community.
Al develop the chapter based on his presentation on the topic of “Effective Cyber Deception”. The presentation discussed various cyber deception techniques and potential avenues to consider including active and passive deception techniques. Active cyber deception can involve interactive engagement against a real time adversary while passive deceptions can involve “setting traps for malicious users”. Blending both can be a very effective cyber security approach; possibly using a passive deception to trigger the active deception. Other approaches and challenges were explored in detail including network reconnaissance sensing and anti-reconnaissance defenses as well as key considerations such as differentiation between a true potential adversary and a friendly users ‘false positive’ detection to avoid friendly fire or collateral damage. The presentation was developed by Al Underbrink, with participation from various other Sentar Subject Matter Experts.
